Hearing your enemy’s footsteps approaching, or the sound of a car engine revving up can be the difference between life and death in a game. Believe me, this is where a good gaming headphone cuts the ice.

As an avid gamer, I’ve been playing games for as long as I can remember, from the classic Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System to the latest FPS games on my PC.

Over the years, I’ve learned that having the right gear can make all the difference in the world when it comes to gaming. I understand your pain regarding poor audio quality and can affirm that it can be just as important as graphics or gameplay.

That’s why I set out to find headphones that would give me the best audio experience without breaking the bank.

I tested several budget gaming headphones, and honestly, was blown away by the quality of some of them. When testing, I looked for features such as comfort, audio clarity, noise cancellation, and of course, affordability.

The headphones I settled on delivered an impressive audio experience with crystal clear sound and deep bass that made me feel right in the middle of the action. So stick around as I break down the features of these headphones and why they’re a must-have for any gamer on a budget.

Razer Kraken Gaming Headset – Best Budget PC Gaming Headset

budget gaming headphones

Why do we choose this? Well, it’s simple. Looking for an immersive gaming experience with 7.1 surround sound, ensuring you don’t miss a single sound or cue; Kraken has it all. What I liked the most about this gaming headset is its 12 Hz – 28 kHz frequency response which is wider than most gaming headsets in its class and ensures that you can hear even the most subtle sounds in your game, allowing for a more hypnotic experience.

Who’s it for: For serious gamers who value sound quality, comfort, and style.

Who Should Avoid It: Regular gamers who only play occasionally, and those who prefer a chubby chunky design.

The Best Selling Points of Razer Kraken Gaming Headset

  • Cooling Gel Infused Ear Cushions – Gel-infused ear cushions to help reduce heat buildup and provide long-lasting comfort during extended gaming sessions.
  • Absolutely Lightweight on Ears – Lightweight aluminum frame and suspended headband, which distributes the weight evenly across your head and reduces pressure on your ears.

Immersive Bass – Custom-tuned 50mm drivers, that provide clear and powerful bass, making explosions and gunfire sound realistic and immersive.

Design and Usability

Honestly, I am a pure Black lover and the elegant “ALL-Black” Razer Kraken with the lightest weight, sleek profile and the most competitive pricing makes it one of my favorite contenders on the list.

Well, the Kraken has a minimalist and slick touch in its design sense and in my case, it fits well on my head. The headset also features in-line audio controls, allowing for quick adjustments to volume and muting of the microphone.

I was particularly impressed by the flexibility of the headband which was strong and durable during adjustments.

However, it is not all bells and whistles since the ear cups were a bit hard and uncomfortable after long gaming sessions. I played Red Dead Redemption 2 using these headphones for six hours straight and can feel the pressure around my ear cartilage.

In terms of usability, the headset had nothing to go wrong. It is compatible with a variety of devices, including PCs, Macs, and consoles. The headset also has a 3.5mm audio jack, making it easy to plug and play. But I did find the volume control a bit off as it was difficult to figure out the perfect setting using the wheel, especially while testing it on my Xbox.

Performance and Gameplay

The Razer Kraken Gaming Headset delivers on this front with impressive sound quality and directional sound, making it an excellent choice for gamers who want to take their gaming experience to the next level. Since the frequency of the headphones was wide I was able to hear notes perfectly, without distortion.

For first-person shooter games like Call of Duty and Apex Legends, the headset provided an excellent directional sound that helped me pinpoint the location of enemy footsteps and gunfire. I also measured its decibels (dB) to ensure that it was not damaging to the ear and the reading came at 79, despite the high volume.

However, when it comes to games such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077, the Razer Kraken Gaming Headset and Sound BlasterX H6, which I tested alongside, performed the same. The bass of both of the gaming headsets had almost zero difference but the Razer Kraken was clearly the winner in terms of control and its lightweight design.

One negative aspect of the headset’s performance that I noticed was that the microphone could sometimes pick up ambient noise from the surrounding environment, which could be distracting for other players in online games. However, this issue was relatively minor and didn’t significantly impact my overall gaming experience.

Pros

  • Sleek and stylish design with comfortable leatherette ear cups and a sturdy adjustable headband.
  • Excellent sound quality with powerful bass, clear treble, and directional sound, providing an immersive gaming experience.
  • Tangle-free braided cable with in-line controls for easy adjustments during gameplay.
  • Low maintenance with easy-to-clean ear cups and the headband.
  • Compatible with multiple devices, including PCs, consoles, and mobile devices, making it versatile for different gaming setups.

Cons

  • The microphone could be improved in terms of ambient noise reduction, which could be distracting for other players during online games.
  • The headset is relatively heavy for people with small ears, which could cause some discomfort during extended gaming sessions.

Alternative to Razer Kraken Gaming Headset: Sound BlasterX H6, Corsair HS60 PRO

Among both of the alternatives the Sound BlasterX H6 performed exceptionally well when compared to Razer Kraken Gaming. The plus point about Sound BlasterX H6 was the RGB Lighting ring on earcups which the Razer lacked. However, the decibels rating when measured was too high for Sound Blaster H6 (98 dB) as compared to Razer Kraken (79) which was a big turn off especially when playing first-person shooting games.

Sound BlasterX H6 is also more suitable for casual gamers that prefer personalization and extreme bass. In contrast, Kraken is the best go-to option for those who are in the game for sound quality, comfort, and style.

SteelSeries New Arctis Nova 3 – An Affordable Gaming Headset

Budget gaming headphones

Why Do We Choose This? The custom-designed Nova Acoustic System delivers excellent audio quality that can be fully customized using the Pro-grade Parametric EQ. The 360° spatial audio really put an excellent on me with its performance, letting you immerse yourself in the game world to experience every important sound. It surely finishes a competitive edge. What’s more? Well, Headphones with RGB is a common thing; however, its dynamic RGB lighting was something that truly stands out for me, especially when comparing it to the Razer Kraken Gaming Headset I reviewed above.

Who’s it for: Those who game for extended hours and need something comfortable and breathable to wear.

Who should avoid it: Gamers who are into serious sound and prefer something that delivers amazing and deep bass quality.

The Best Selling Points of SteelSeries New Arctis Nova 3

  • 360° Spatial Audio – One of the standout features! While using it, the audio quality was so precise that I could easily tell which direction enemies were coming from, even when they were behind me.
  • AI-Powered Noise Canceling Microphone – Boasts an AI-powered noise-canceling microphone for potently filtering out background noise for crystal-clear voice communication.
  • Dynamic RGB Lighting – RGB lighting adds an extra level of style and personality to your gaming setup. Although a lot of gamers prefer a minimalist design, personally, I did find it something to be about.

Design and Usability

The SteelSeries New Arctis Nova 3 is designed to provide a comfortable and customized fit. The ComfortMAX System with height-adjusting, rotating earcups, and AirWeave Memory Foam cushions ensured a perfect fit that remained comfortable even during long gaming sessions.

At first, the headband felt stiff to my hands. Yet, it was stretchy and lightweight, and it didn’t feel too tight or too loose, which was great. The headphones also feature a retractable ClearCast Gen 2 mic that provided crystal clear communication with other players, and I found it easy to retract when not in use. While this may be some technical stuff for many beginner tech nerds, yet good mic design support easy usability and gaming performance.

However, I did find the headband adjustment mechanism to be a bit finicky. It can be hard to find the right position for the earcups, and I found myself having to fiddle with it a bit to get them just right. Additionally, while the headband is stretchy, it might not fit larger heads comfortably.

Performance and Gameplay

I tested these headphones with a variety of games, including first-person shooters, and RPGs, and they performed exceptionally well in all scenarios. While the 360° spatial audio technology blessed me to enjoy superior sound effects, it also helped me to pinpoint the direction of in-game sounds accurately, giving me a competitive advantage.

Honestly speaking! The headphones provided excellent spatial awareness, allowing me to hear every footstep, gunshot, and explosion with incredible clarity. Whether I was sneaking up on an enemy in a first-person shooter or exploring a vast open world in an RPG, the SteelSeries New Arctis Nova 3 helped me stay fully immersed in the game.

One feature that really impressed me was the Pro-grade Parametric EQ, which allowed me to customize the sound to my liking. The software was intuitive and easy to use, making it easy to tweak the audio settings based on the game I was playing.

While the customizable EQ feature is an excellent addition, it might take some trial and error to find the perfect settings for a specific game. Despite this minor issue, I still believe that the SteelSeries New Arctis Nova 3 headphones are a great choice for gamers looking for a perfect gaming experience at an affordable price point.

Pros

  • Impressive audio quality with a built-in equalizer for customization
  • Lightweight and comfortable design with performance fabric ear cushions
  • Sleek and modern design with a retractable mic

Cons

  • May not meet the standards of audiophiles who demand the highest quality sound

Alternative to SteelSeries New Arctis Nova 3: Corsair Void RGB Elite Wireless

While comparing the Corsair Void RGB Elite Wireless with the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3, I found slight differences in terms of performance. For one, the Corsair headset lacked the Pro-grade Parametric EQ found in the SteelSeries model, making it more difficult to customize the sound to my liking.

The Corsair headset’s on-ear design also did not provide as much comfort as the Arctis Nova 3’s over-ear design with AirWeave Memory Foam cushions. Additionally, I also decided to choose Arctis Nova 3’s AI-powered as the winner between the two because of its noise-canceling mic and dynamic RGB lighting features, both of which were impressive add-ons that the Corsair headset did not match.

  • 12 Hour Battery: Good battery life! PlayStation PULSE 3D literally surprised me while providing up to 12 hours of gameplay on a single charge.
  • Good compatibility with PS: Seamless integration with PS, providing exceptional sound quality. I didn’t have to worry about any compatibility issues or spend time troubleshooting.

Design and Usability

image 6

When it comes to the design of the PlayStation PULSE 3D Wireless Headset, to my goodness, simplistic and minimalistic looks beheld me for multiple seconds. While I am a fan of aggressive and sporty looks especially in “All black” taste, the white and black combination raises my heart beat. So for white and black lovers, it can be a perfect addition to their gaming setup, and I appreciate the attention to detail that has gone into the build.

The earpads and headband strap are ergonomically sound, and the headphones sat comfortably and snugly on my head without feeling too heavy. The controls for adjusting audio and chat settings were easily accessible and intuitive, and I appreciated the hidden noise-canceling microphones for clear communication with my friends during online gaming sessions.

However, This might be an HCI or UX like thing but needs improvement. The placement of the controls on the headphones themselves is a little impractical. They are located on the extreme back of the left earcup, which can be a bit awkward to reach while wearing headphones.

Overall, I found this gaming headphone to be well thought out and user-friendly, with only a minor drawback to consider.

Performance and Gameplay

When it comes to performance and gameplay, the PlayStation PULSE 3D Wireless headphones surely tender a great audio experience for gaming. This is a sort of Looks versus Performance thing; looks don’t show aggression but performance does. Technically, headphones are specifically fine-tuned for 3D audio on PS5 consoles, which creates an immersive audio experience in games that support it.

With a ravishing frequency response range of 20Hz-20kHz, the balance between low and high frequencies is extremely optimal, that’s why I liked the bass response especially. In my experience using these headphones while playing games such as Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed, I noticed that the audio was clear and detailed, allowing me to hear important in-game sounds such as footsteps and environmental cues.

The microphone performed exceptionally well during online gaming sessions, and I appreciated how easy it was to adjust it to my needs. I never had to worry about background noise interfering with my communication, which was a significant advantage during intense gaming sessions.

One thing to note, however, is that the audio quality may not be as impressive when listening to music or watching movies. The headphones seem to be optimized more for gaming audio specifically. Overall, the PlayStation PULSE 3D Wireless headphones offer a solid performance and gameplay experience with their fine-tuned 3D audio, clear communication capabilities, and strong bass response.

Pros

  • Immersive 3D audio technology that enhances the gaming experience.
  • Retractable microphone that provides clear communication during online gaming sessions.
  • Sleek and modern design that looks great as part of any gaming setup.
  • Wireless feature that allows for easy movement while gaming.
  • Lightweight and comfortable design that can be worn for extended gaming sessions.

Cons

  • High price point compared to some other gaming headsets on the market.
  • Earcups can be heavy and uncomfortable for people with small ears.

Alternative to PlayStation PULSE 3D: Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2

I simultaneously tested the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2 headphones, and while they do offer some strong features such as massive 48+ hour battery life, an officially licensed connection for Xbox, and comfortable, glasses-friendly ear cushions, overall I found the PlayStation PULSE 3D Wireless headphones to be the clear winner.

The PULSE 3D headphones are specifically designed for gamers with 3D audio tuning on PS5 consoles, hidden noise-canceling microphones, and easy-access controls. While the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2 headphones are a solid choice for casual gamers, the PULSE 3D headphones offer a better balance of quality audio, design, and usability at a much lesser price point.

The Best Selling Points for Xbox Wireless Headset

  • Seamless Connectivity with Xbox: Sublime integration with Xbox consoles, making it incredibly easy to set up and use.
  • Comes with the Latest Sound Technologies: Includes Dolby Atmos and Windows Sonic, providing immersive and lifelike audio experiences.
  • Auto-Mute: Automatically mutes the microphone when it’s flipped up, preventing unwanted background noise from being transmitted to other players. A Smart stuff!

Design and Usability

For typical Xbox design, the modern but minimalist design with matte black finish and Xbox on each ear cup is definitely a treat to have under a budget. With this sort of aesthetic sense, the headphones are lightweight and have an adjustable headband.

I particularly liked the placement of the buttons and dials on this headset as they are easy to reach when needed, and aren’t placed at the extreme end as we analyzed this issue in the PlayStation PULSE 3D Wireless Headset.

In terms of usability, the Xbox Wireless Headset is very easy to use, it let me pairing the headphones with my Xbox console was a breeze. The headphones also work with Bluetooth and can be used with a range of devices, which is a nice touch.

However, I did experience a minor issue with the microphone. While it does feature a great voice, the absence of noise cancelation is a big no for me, especially when it comes to playing games with my team. Also, the mic can pick up unwanted background noise which can be a bit distracting for both the user and other players in the game

Performance and Gameplay

The audio quality of this headphone is outstanding, and I was impressed with how it handled different soundscapes and environments in games. Playing games like Call of Duty and Battlefield, I found that spatial sound technologies like Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone:X really enhanced the overall gaming experience.

The headphones have a frequency response range of 20Hz – 20kHz, which means that they can reproduce a wide range of audio frequencies accurately.

One game that really blew me away while using the Xbox Wireless Headset was Forza Horizon 4. The headphone delivered crystal-clear audio that made every engine rev and tire screech feel like it was happening right in front of me. The game’s immersive environment was complemented perfectly by the headset’s audio performance, creating an unforgettable racing experience.

While I was generally impressed with the performance of the Xbox Wireless Headset, I did notice that the microphone quality was not up to par with the rest of the headphone’s features. Although it worked well for basic communication during gameplay, the mic lacked the clarity and depth that I was hoping for and this was especially noticeable during online gaming sessions

Pros

  • Immersive audio quality provides directional audio beneficial for competitive gaming.
  • Quick and easy charging with a USB-C port that provides up to 15 hours of battery life,
  • Compatibility with advanced technologies like Dolby Atmos and Windows Sonic

Cons

  • Limited compatibility with non-Xbox gaming systems.
  • The microphone performance is average

Alternative to Xbox Wireless Headset: SteelSeries Arctis 9X Wireless

As an alternative to the Xbox Wireless Headset, I found the SteelSeries Arctis 9X Wireless to be a solid option for gamers. While it offers similar features like integrated Xbox Wireless connectivity, Bluetooth compatibility, and long battery life, the Xbox Wireless Headset edges it out in a few key areas.

One of the biggest advantages of the Xbox Wireless Headset is its spatial sound technology, giving gamers a competitive edge in games that rely on sound cues. Additionally, the Xbox Wireless Headset’s auto-mute and voice isolation features are more effective at reducing noise interruptions during chat sessions, both of which aren’t at par when it comes to SteelSeries Arctis 9X Wireless.

  • 50 Hours of Battery Life: Humongous Battery Life. Honestly, you can go days without having to recharge it, which is great for when I’m in the middle of a gaming marathon.
  • Detachable Mic: As someone who doesn’t always need to use a microphone, I like that I can remove it when I don’t need it, and it’s not in my way.
  • TriForce 40mm Drivers: Deliver incredible audio quality. The sound is crisp and clear, and it really helps to immerse you in the game.

Design and Usability

Ah, for the design and usability department – the short description is, Impressive. The lightweight and ergonomic design of the headset made it comfortable to wear during long gaming sessions. The memory foam ear cushions and swiveling ear cups raise the overall comfort and convenience game. Plus, I really love how the ear cups are supremely made of a soft and breathable material that doesn’t get too hot, and the headband is adjustable to fit different head sizes.

The on-headset controls were cinch to access and allowed for effortless control over music, videos, and calls. However, one downside I experienced with the Razer Barracuda X was its limited features.

While the headset does offer high-quality audio and seamless switching between 2.4GHz and Bluetooth mode, it would have been nice to have more features available to personalize the listening experience such as RGB or noise-canceling. Overall, the design and usability of the Razer Barracuda X make it a great choice for gamers who value comfort and convenience, but the limited customization may be a drawback for some.

Performance and Gameplay

As a gamer who demands the best performance from my gaming headphones, the Razer Barracuda X did not disappoint, believe me. The patented Razer TriForce 40mm Drivers delivered exceptional audio quality with crisp highs, well-defined mids, and powerful lows, providing an immersive gaming experience that truly enhanced the gameplay.

The detachable Razer HyperClear Cardioid Mic is a game changer here for users who are much sensitive about their microphone supporting crispy crunchy team plays. That being said, It suppressed background noise, resulting in clear voice communication with my teammates during intense gaming sessions.

While I was generally very impressed with the performance of the Razer Barracuda X Wireless Gaming & Mobile Headset, there was one minor issue that I noticed. In some games, particularly those with a lot of low-frequency sounds, the bass could be a little overwhelming at times.

Although, this isn’t a huge issue, and it’s something that can be adjusted with EQ settings, it’s worth noting for users who are particularly sensitive to bass-heavy sound

Pros

  • Lightweight and comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
  • Memory foam ear cushions and adjustable headband.
  • Delivers clear, immersive sound to enhance your gaming experience.
  • The 40mm drivers provide a balanced sound signature for both gaming and music.
  • Tremendous 50 hours of battery life runs through even the longest gaming sessions.
  • Intuitive controls and USB-C wireless dongle makes setup easy

Cons

  • Limited customization may be an off
  • Mic quality could have been better like the design

Alternative to Razer Barracuda X: ASUS TUF Gaming H3

If you can’t get your head around the Razer Barracuda X, the ASUS TUF Gaming H3 headset is a great alternative to consider. While it does offer virtual 7.1 surround sound and clear audio with strong bass, the Razer Barracuda X still comes out as the clear winner.

The Barracuda X offers the ability to seamlessly switch between 2.4GHz and Bluetooth modes, while the TUF Gaming H3 lacks Bluetooth connectivity. Additionally, the detachable microphone on the Barracuda X is tuned to suppress background noise for enhanced voice capture, while the TUF Gaming H3’s unidirectional boom microphone is only tuned for clear voice communication.
